KRAZY KAT
From 1916 to 1918, William Randolph Hearst and Hearst Vitagraph
News Pictorial produced an animated version of the popular newspaper
strip KRAZY KAT. Although, eventually, other studios would take
over from Hearst after 1920, the Hearst Vitagraph/International
Film Services cartoons are the very earliest. Here is a fantastic
collection of original production art from these early films,
from the estate of Grim Natwick and these are very
likely his drawings. Natwick was the great pioneering animator who
created Betty Boop and later would animate the title Heroine in
Disney's feature "Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs."
The animation for these cartoons was done directly on the paper,
not on 'cels'. The artists inked the drawings and these were shot
under the camera one at a time, retracing elements such as backgrounds.
